Stand Up

Today is a good day. I have the day off (WOO!) and for our anniversary/Tyler’s birthday, I bought us tickets to see one of our favorite comedians, Daniel Tosh, live this evening. If you’ve never seen Tosh.O, it’s a ridiculous show that compiles the best of those I- can’t-stop-looking-but-know-I-should-turn-away types of internet videos that we all love to hate. Tosh is a hilarious and highly-inappropriate comic whose stand-ups sell out no matter where they are, so we’re really excited that we were able to snatch these tickets up quick. We’re terrified of getting heckled (apparently this happens a lot during his shows) so I’m going to forego the beer runs/bathroom breaks once we get seated, and can hopefully stay out of the spotlight.

Tomorrow, we’re heading to Beaumont to see our family and friends for Easter and I couldn’t be happier to see them. Hopefully, Sunday will be filled with some of my Grandmother’s baked ham, and my Grandpa’s famous iced tea before we head back to Houston.

May you have a light-hearted, relaxing weekend!

easter egg

This Sunday is Easter, and while I love this holiday mainly because it means I get to spend time with my family and friends back in Beaumont, I also wish it was Easter year-round just so I could have an excuse to wear head to toe pastels all day, every day. I don’t know what it is about the soft color palette that I love so much. Maybe it’s the fact that makes me feel like spring has finally arrived, or that the shades are demure yet still so striking, but I just can’t get enough.

Below are some of my favorite pastel looks.

Essie Nice is Nice

Lauren Conrad hair

Elie Saab runway dress

my cardigan collection complete with several pastel colors

one of my favorite tops

If you’re celebrating Easter, I hope it’s full of eggs, glitter, pastels, and hoppy memories (I had to).

have your cake, eat it too

They say great minds think alike. For Christmas, I gave my Grandmother a subscription to Bon Appetit, the best cooking magazine there is. Turns out, she gave me a subscription too, which I couldn’t be happier about. If you know me, you know I love pictures of food, and this magazine has the most spectacular, up-close and personal views of some of the most delicious foods ever, so of course, I try and recreate these masterpieces from time to time. Upon becoming obsessed with Bon Appetit, I also discovered Saveur, another amazing food magazine, and even better blog, chocked full of recipes, photos, and news about restaurants from around the country.

I have a bit of a sweet tooth, so decided to make the Saveur “Best Damn Meyer Lemon Cake” and I must say, it was delicious. If you’re craving something sweet but not over the top, this cake really hits the spot. We had it for breakfast and dessert. Honestly, what’s better than cake in the mornings?

blog love: heart of light

If you read Cupcakes and Cashmere (which I’ve blogged about before) then you may or may not have noticed Emily talking about her friend Rachel in various posts. Out of curiosity one day, I clicked on the hyperlink associated with Rachel’s name, and was taken to her blog, Heart of Light. It’s an adorable compilation of recipes and photos from this lab worker turned talented photog. I love the fact that she’s someone who started her blog out of a need for pure creative expression, not in order to make money, kind of like me. She’s also someone you’d want to grab coffee with on a Sunday morning, or call to ask for advice on how many more cups of sugar to add to your pie.

Here are some of my favorite photos of hers from recent posts:

Check it out if you need a new blog to add to your Google Reader.

electric feel

Do you ever feel attracted to certain colors when you shop? Usually, it’s ballerina pinks and sparkly gold tints that catch my eye when I’m perusing the racks, but lately, bright shades of neon, emerald greens, and anything sea foam green have been causing me to do a double take. Here are some of my favorite items in those hues:

bright messengers

neon watch from Shop Bop

J. Crew tees. I picked up this one in pink at the outlet last weekend

dress from Dishfunctional Designs

Miu Miu heels

May you have a bright weekend!

cat eyes

I really need some new sunglasses. I’ve been wearing the classic Wayfarer style for close to 4 years now, and need to switch it up. Recently, I came across some amazing cat eye style glasses from House of Harlow. Even though these are a little extreme, I’m thinking about picking up a less drastic Ray Ban version. What do you think?

stuffed bell peppers

Paula Deen is one of my favorite people. Yes, her recipes contain more calories and fat than you should ever consume in one sitting, but her downhome style of cooking reminds me of my Mom’s recipes growing up, and I can’t help put to include one or two of her concoctions in our weekly cooking routine. Most recently, we tried her recipe for stuffed bell peppers and they were delicious.

first, gut the peppers

prepare the stuffing

saute the ground turkey and onions

cheese!

add the stuffing and pour sauce from frying pan over peppers

bake and enjoy!

SXSW Recap

Somehow, I made it through SXSW and am back home to normalcy. I went to the Interactive portion of the festival with my coworkers, which was equal parts rewarding and challenging. Ultimately, we learned so many great lessons about ourselves and our business, and came away exhausted, but invigorated. Thanks to my wonderful family and amazing friends for letting me stay with them for 10 days; I couldn’t have stayed sane without sneaking in the occasional giggle fests, tall glasses of wine, and dance parties.

Once interactive was over, Alex, Emily and I ventured out to experience some of the musical portions of the festival, and I couldn’t be happier that we did. Standing in line for four hours to see a show? Yes, it sounds completely ridiculous, but it was worth every second. Girl Talk is a DJ who makes the best compilations of old school rap, oldies, and pop that somehow comes out as the loudest, bassiest, songs that you just can’t help to dance to. Once we got inside, there was a food truck, free Patron and other top-shelf drinks, no bathroom lines, and more confetti and balloons than you could shake a stick at. Basically, heaven.

After seeing that show, we ventured over Auditorium Shores with a bottle of wine and some blankets to see my favorite band of all time – The Counting Crows – which was incredible. They never tour, so to see them this time made my week. Then on Saturday morning, we headed to The W Hotel to see a live showcase from the best radio station in the world. Citizen Cope is also one of my very favorite artists, so it was incredible to see him live, and free. We also saw The Givers, who I knew nothing about, but am now completely in love with.

Below are some of my favorite photos from the week. Were you at SX this year?
